Tributes flow for croc hunter George Craig, who helped put Far North Queensland on the tourism map and led a remarkable life of adventure.

A 94-year-old, known for his friendship with "best mate" — the world's largest crocodile in captivity — has passed away in Cairns overnight.

He later arrived in Melbourne and sailed to Adelaide where he bought a rifle before travelling to the Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea where he became a hunter. "When Cassius died, that wouldn't have heralded well for George. They were very close," Professor Webb said."George would have to stay back from the window because Cassius would come bolting out of the water."

"The knowledge he was able to convey to the visitors and kids at Marineland Melanesia became, very, very invaluable," Mr Monolis said.
