RIP to a 'trailblazer' of Black British theatre
Tributes have flooded in to former EastEnders star Mona Hammond following her death at the age of 91. The actress played Blossom Jackson between 1994 and 1997 before making a brief return in 2010 and was a popular figure among fans of the BBC soap opera.
Jamaican-born Hammond became an OBE in the Queen's birthday honours in 2005 for her services to drama. She also founded the Talawa theatre company, one of the UK's most prominent black theatre companies, to address the “lack of creative opportunities for black actors and the marginalisation of black peoples from cultural processes”.The company is among those who have paid tribute to Hammond, tweeting: “We are devastated to hear of the passing of Mona Hammond OBE.
