A five-year-old girl became the fourth person to die in Victorian waters since Christmas Day. The dead include two teenage boys.
A 17-year-old who was one of four people, including a five-year-old child, who drowned over a scorching Christmas period has been remembered for his “bright smile” and passion for football.
Life Saving Victoria state commander Kane Treloar said the boy was washed off a sandbank and could not be revived after he was found by rescuers. Treloar said it was difficult to compare the figures with previous years because the weather then was milder than this summer. Ubuntu Project chief executive Nor Shanino said he would like more outreach to multicultural communities about swimming safety.
There could also be a cultural component in terms of where people were from in Africa and whether their parents or family had experience swimming, Shanino said.
