Triple-0 received a call about an abandoned van on train tracks south of Wollongong four minutes before the collision involving the commuter train.
Investigators believe the train crash at Kembla Grange could have been prevented if the driver had been warned earlier about the car on the tracks.The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has found a commuter train derailment south of Wollongong could have been avoided if the crew learnt of a triple-0 call earlier.
The driver was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and two passengers in the front carriage were also injured. Police alerted Sydney Trains approximately two minutes later, and it took another two minutes until the local signaller attempted to hail the train at 04:09:35am. "The audio recording of these calls highlighted emergency awareness as an area for improvement," the ATSB found.
