From November 1, the incentive that GPs receive from Medicare to bulk bill children under 16-years-old, pensioners and other Commonwealth cardholders will be tripled for most standard consults.

Picture: Supplied Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke about the new incentive for GPs from a Gregory Hills medical centre in New South Wales on Wednesday. "Primary health care that GPs deliver makes an enormous difference to people, and the easier they can see a doctor what we ensure is that health conditions get treated at the earliest possible opportunity.

In major cities, a doctor's incentive will rise by 34 per cent for a standard bulk billing consultation of under 20 minutes for eligible patients.In regional and rural Australia, GPs will get about 50 per cent more for the same visit, boosting their incentive to as high as $81.10 in some locations. He said he knew of many general practices that tried to continue bulk billing for vulnerable cohorts, but were forced to increase gap fees for other patients to keep their businesses afloat.
