I have booked flights from Sydney to Tokyo using frequent flyer points, but I have to go via Melbourne. What if my domestic flight is cancelled or delayed?

I have booked flights from Sydney to Tokyo using Qantas frequent flyer points. Booking choices were limited and I am travelling to Melbourne early morning for a connecting flight to Tokyo with a transfer time of 90 minutes. What if the flight from Sydney to Melbourne is cancelled or delayed and I miss the connecting flight? If your flights are all on the same booking, you shouldn’t have a problem. Airline software is designed to allow sufficient time between connecting flights.

From Paris we have five days to get to Venice, keen to explore possible train journeys with a stopover. Can you suggest any itineraries? So many possibilities here, but my pick would be a train from Paris to Lucerne in Switzerland. This journey takes just under five hours if you pick the right train, with only one change. Spend two to three nights.

Including time in Porto, my husband and I have about nine days to drive to Barcelona. We are particularly interested in the Basque area and enjoy small villages in rural settings. Could you recommend where to stay and for how long?Porto deserves three nights at least, the cruise along the Douro will absorb one day and that’s a journey you don’t want to miss. After that, my first base would be Cangas de Onis in Spain’s Asturias region, a village with a Roman bridge and a rich and proud history.

Next stop Laguardia, a fortified medieval town within the Basque region’s El Rioja wine region and rated one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. Spend another three nights and explore some of the nearby towns and villages including Elciego, Bastida, Vitoria, Rioja Alavesa and Samaniego. From there you have a five-hour drive to Barcelona. We have about two weeks in early April next year to visit Malta and Sicily, as well as a day or two in Naples to visit Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius.

This part of Sicily is not well served by public transport and despite the challenges of narrow streets and finding somewhere to park, a hire car will expand your touring options. In Ortigia there are several parking areas if you turn left once across the bridge from Syracuse. In Malta base yourselves in Sliema or St Julian’s and take day trips to explore the island as well as neighbouring Gozo and Camino.
