One of the writers of Tropic Thunder is still standing by the movie today. A satirical film centering around a group of stuck-up actors abandoned in the jungle, Tropic Thunder explores the nature of Hollywood and filmmaking, while also including a great deal of action. Despite relying on comedy and playing on common tropes, it hasn't escaped criticism for a few controversial elements, including Robert Downey Jr.'s Blackface.

Why Tropic Thunder Continues To Draw Debate There are still some parts of Tropic Thunder that do deserve further consideration, especially in the modern political climate. While he managed to avoid criticism at the time, Downey Jr. spent the entirety of Tropic Thunder in Blackface. As Kirk Lazarus, a method actor cast to play a Black man, Downey Jr. had to rely on stereotypes while also walking around masquerading as a white actor playing a Black character.
