Tropical Cyclone Alfred has escalated to a Category 2 storm, prompting a cyclone warning for a vast stretch of Queensland's coast. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for destructive winds, heavy rain, and dangerous surf conditions.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred , intensifying rapidly overnight, has been upgraded from a cyclone watch to a cyclone warning , reaching Category 2 strength. The warning zone spans from Double Island Point in Queensland down to Yamba in New South Wales, encompassing densely populated areas such as Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, and Ballina.

Premier David Crisafulli announced on social media late Tuesday that the cyclone had changed direction and was now heading towards the Queensland Coast, with all available modeling from the Bureau of Meteorology indicating it would turn back towards the coast overnight and continue crossing it. Crisafulli underscored the potential severity of the situation, noting that the area of interest had narrowed to a region north of Noosa to south of the border, a densely populated area. He urged Queenslanders to remain vigilant, reminding them that the Mary River and its tributaries down to the border and beyond remained under a flood watch. While acknowledging that some southeast residents may not fully grasp the magnitude of the impending system, Crisafulli emphasized the state's resilience in the face of disasters. He expressed confidence in the people of southeast Queensland, highlighting their ability to weather storms, both literally and figuratively. Despite the cyclone being a different kind of event, he stressed that the preparations they had already made would make a significant difference. Crisafulli urged residents to visit the state's disaster management page for the latest updates and reassured them that the state was prepared for the weather event. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous surf conditions. Brisbane residents have been diligently stocking up on essential supplies, leading to shortages of water, bread, and milk in supermarkets. Supermarket chains are working tirelessly to restock shelves but have appealed to customers to purchase only what they need to ensure that everyone has access to vital supplies. Brisbane's Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner, confirmed that a staggering 74,000 sandbags were distributed within a single day, double the number distributed during the 2022 floods. All 24-hour sandbag stations have temporarily closed for replenishment, but additional collection points have been set up at Acacia Ridge, Toowong, Camp Hill, and Boondall. Ferry services in the region have been suspended until further notice. The Moreton Bay Islands, including Russell, Macleay, Karragarra, and Lamb islands, are bracing for the brunt of the storm, with authorities issuing evacuation notices or advising residents to secure their homes. These islands are expected to experience severe weather conditions with destructive winds and heavy rainfall. Brisbane Airport remains open, but travelers are advised to monitor flight updates as the deteriorating weather could lead to delays or cancellations
