Tropical Cyclone Alfred is forecast to make landfall as a category 2 storm in Queensland, bringing the risk of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and coastal erosion to NSW. The Northern Rivers and Mid-North Coast are particularly vulnerable to flooding.

A powerful tropical cyclone, Alfred, is set to make landfall in Queensland , Australia, bringing with it the threat of heavy rainfall , strong winds, and coastal erosion . The cyclone, the first to impact New South Wales in over three decades, is expected to intensify into a category 2 storm before making landfall north of Brisbane late Thursday or early Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued flood watch alerts for the Northern Rivers and Mid-North Coast regions of NSW, areas already scarred by devastating floods in 2022. Residents in these regions are bracing for the possibility of up to a meter of rain within a three-day period, starting Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Saturday morning. Isolated downpours could bring as much as 800 millimeters of rain in the far northeast of NSW, while areas 50 to 100 kilometers south of the Queensland border could experience 400 to 600 millimeters.Widespread heavy rainfall, reaching up to 400 millimeters, is anticipated between Coffs Harbour and the Queensland border. Friday is predicted to witness the heaviest rainfall before Alfred moves inland, where it will weaken into a tropical low, bringing between 25 and 100 millimeters over the weekend. Wind gusts of up to 120km/h are anticipated in parts of northeast NSW. The BOM also warns of abnormally high tides and powerful waves, leading to severe beach erosion along NSW's North Coast. Rock fishers are urged to avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean. The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has deployed over 50 flood rescue and storm response staff to the affected areas, equipped with communication equipment, aviation resources, and specialized vehicles. Residents are advised to prepare for potential flooding by having evacuation plans in place, securing loose objects around their homes, and sandbagging if necessary. Lismore, a town particularly vulnerable to flooding, has seen its supermarkets stripped bare as residents stock up on supplies. However, the SES assures the community that there is no need to panic buy, stating that they will assist with resupplying essential goods if communities become isolated
