Cyclone Gabrielle is intensifying but moving 'well away' from the mainland, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
abc.net.au/news/tropical-cyclone-gabrielle-intensifying/101949506Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to intensify into a category two system by this afternoon, but is still unlikely to make landfall on Queensland's coast.
"It is currently a category one system and, as it tracks towards the south-east today, we are expecting it to reach category two strength some time during the afternoon and then intensify even further, reaching category three, or severe tropical cyclone strength, some time Friday as it continues to move away from the Queensland Coast," senior meteorologist Bradley Wood said.
Norfolk Island is expected to bear the brunt of the destructive winds, as the category two system is likely to pass very close to it over the weekend. "We are expecting to see increased winds across marine districts, as well as some increased surf and swell out on the water," BOM senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said.
