Tropical storm conditions could reach eastern New England by Friday night and continue until Saturday night or Sunday.

Lee became the Atlantic’s first Category 5 hurricane of the season last Friday, expeditiously strengthening from an 80 mph tropical storm into a monstrous 160 mph buzz saw in just 24 hours. That ultrafast uptick in winds made it the third most rapidly-intensifying storm ever observed in the Atlantic, with records dating back to 1851.Experts predicted an anomalously active 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, and so far that’s proven the case.

On infrared satellite, Lee was already looking a bit lopsided. That’s because dry air was infiltrating and eroding its circulation from within. In the coming days, Lee will undergo “extratropical transition,” taking the shape of a comma as dry air punches into the system from behind. It will also move away from the warm, life-giving waters of the tropical Atlantic and instead begin deriving energy from the jet stream and temperature contrasts.

To the north, coastal flooding and a similar surge is possible along the western shores of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, as well as along the east coast of Nova Scotia.Rainfall will largely be relegated to the immediate coastline in southern New England. An inch or two of rain is possible on Cape Cod, with only some showers along and east of Interstate 95. Next to no rain is expected west of Interstate 84.
