Analysis: Trouble Down Under - Root, and England, hit where it hurts most | danbrettig
It would be difficult to imagine an England captain suffering a single worse or more painful day than Joe Root endured on Sunday as the Adelaide Ashes Test – and therefore the series – slipped almost completely from his grasp.
Struck in the groin by a throwdown from the touring side’s spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel in warm-ups, and not wearing a protective box at the time, Root missed almost 90 minutes of play for a precautionary trip to hospital. When Starc, angling in from around the wicket, beat Root’s bat and hit his vulnerable spot as though the ball had been laser guided to do so, the captain could not have been in more pain. Genuine concern around him gradually turned to the mirth usually seen when a batter is hit in the same region.
“That’s the character of the man and it shows what it means to him to be England captain,” Lewis said. “He wants to show how hard he’s prepared to fight to get back into the game.“
