Former asylum Willow Court joins locations such as a former concentration camp in Europe and an African slave house as one of 365 global 'Sites of Conscience'.

The Willow Court precinct in New Norfolk , Tasmania has been recognised as a "Site of Conscience" — joining a global network of more than 300 sites that aims to preserve and memorialise their troubled human rights histories.

But beneath these signs of activity, the site remains deeply intertwined with Tasmania's fraught history of mental health and disability care. Over the years, the complex held thousands of people including alcoholics, people with disabilities, those suffering from mental health problems and young unmarried women.Jon Grant, chairman of WCHSI, sees this recognition as a crucial step in ensuring the site's history is neither erased nor softened.

Despite official oversight, the institution's troubled legacy lingered until its closure at the turn of the millennium. For Carleen Paul, a WCHSI board member, Willow Court is more than just a historical landmark — she spent her childhood within its walls and remains a living testament to its complex history."Even though it was bad, most of the time, it was still our home."

"It's hugely significant and very validating of the work that we've undertaken over more than 15 years," Ms Salt said.

Dutton's Speech: A Familiar Soundtrack in a Troubled DemocracyDutton's Speech: A Familiar Soundtrack in a Troubled DemocracyPeter Dutton's speech outlining the Liberal Party's election strategy draws heavily from past successful campaigns, echoing familiar themes of tax cuts, immigration concerns, and crime. While some policies, like increasing subsidized mental health sessions, are welcomed, the speech's overall tone reflects a negativity-driven approach that highlights the growing anxieties and polarization within Australian society. The author argues that this strategy, while potentially successful in the short term, feeds into a 'bad democracy trap' where voters punish the current government rather than embracing positive alternatives.
