Three days ago, the NFL world was supposed to witness a clash between two of the AFC’s top teams on Monday Night Football. What happened instead was a near...
during the first quarter of Monday night’s game wasn’t something covered in a how-to, but many praised ESPN and its analysts for their coverage of the shocking event.
ESPN initially showed a couple of replays of Hamlin collapsing to the turf before going to a commercial. It wasn’t shown again on the network throughout its coverage. Joe Buck, Aikman’s commentary partner on ESPN, was the first to alert viewers that medical personnel were administering CPR. “The Skycam was above him,” Aikman said. “That was not fed then into, you know, what was being shown publicly, but I could see it in the monitor that I have in the booth. And you can’t even imagine how hard they worked in order to revive him, you know, he had no heartbeat. And so they were applying CPR, and I’m glad he’s doing better by all accounts.. But it looked pretty dire there, and it was just unimaginable that these teams had to watch that and go through that.
“As a result of that, we reported what we were told in the moment and immediately updated fans as new information was learned. This was an unprecedented, rapidly evolving circumstance. All night long, we refrained from speculation,” ESPN said in the statement.
