The California Native Plant Society and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden announced the 're-discovery' of the Santa Ynez groundstar, a flowering plant native to California with just 180 remaining specimens left.

Until now. The California Native Plant Society and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden announced the"re-discovery" of the Santa Ynez groundstar, a rare species of flowering plant native toCollaborators from both organizations said they pieced together information from old records to determine where the annual herb may still be living, and determined it could be on Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County.

The Santa Ynez groundstar was originally described as a new species in 2004, and only a few living botanists had ever seen the plant in the wild before its new species classification, according to a statement shared by the team of researchers last Wednesday. Dr. Dieter Wilken, a research associate with Santa Barbara Botanic Garden who aided in the recent search effort is the only person to have seen the groundstar since it received this new recognition.

“Plants such as this are or could be on the brink of extinction and we can only confidently say they are doing okay once we get eyes on the ground and find them,” CNPS Rare Plant Program Director Aaron Sims said in the press release.
