U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a 'productive' phone call to begin mending their strained relations, which had deteriorated following Trump's election and inauguration. The call came after Trump labeled Canada 'no longer a reliable partner', and Trump's previous rhetoric for annexing Canada sparked trade tensions.

US President Donald Trump has held a 'productive' call with Canada 's new leader a day after he said its neighbour was 'no longer a reliable partner', while Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland to signal America's intent for the island. The feud between the United States and Canada has moved a step closer to being repaired after both leaders held what has been described as a 'productive' phone call.

The relationship between the neighboring countries has soured in the months that have followed Trump's election victory in November and inauguration in January. The US President has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada and make it the 51st state of the US, while a trade war was sparked by Trump announcing 25 percent tariffs on a number of Canadian sectors. As recent as Thursday, new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the US as a country that was 'no longer a reliable partner'. 'It was an extremely productive call, we agree on many things, and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors, that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Carney said during the call he and Trump agreed to 'begin comprehensive negotiations about a new economic and security relationship' directly after the Canadian election on April 28. In the interim, discussions 'will intensify' between US secretary of commerce Howard Lutnick and Canada's minister of international trade and intergovernmental affairs Dominic Le Blanc to address 'immediate concerns'. Carney also informed Trump his government would 'implement retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and our economy' after the US announced additional trade actions will begin on April 2. Trump's referral to Carney as 'Prime Minister' was also a notable sign of respect after calling his predecessor Justin Trudeau 'governor'. While Trump was moving to repair the relationship with a longtime ally, Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland, explaining why the US has been fixated on the island in the early stages of the President's second term. Vance spoke from the US Pituffik Space Base as he pushed Greenland to become independent of Denmark. “Our argument is very simple. It is not with the people of Greenland, who I think are incredible and have an incredible opportunity here,' he said. 'Our argument really is with the leadership of Denmark, which is under invested in Greenland and under invested in its security architecture that simply must change. Vance also explained why Trump had been so keen for the US to acquire the territory. “Look, the president said, clearly he doesn’t think that military force is going to be necessary, but he absolutely believes that Greenland is important part of the security, not just of the United States, but of the world,' he said
