President Donald Trump has banned The Associated Press from the Oval Office and Air Force One because it refuses to call the Gulf of Mexico the 'Gulf of America' as per his executive order. The move has been criticized as press censorship and a violation of the First Amendment. The White House insists the ban is justified due to AP's 'misinformation' and 'irresponsible reporting'.
President Donald Trump has banned one of the main US news agencies, The Associated Press, from the Oval Office and Air Force One because it has refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in line with his executive order.
“While their right to irresponsible and dishonest reporting is protected by the First Amendment, it does not ensure their privilege of unfettered access to limited spaces, like the Oval Office and Air Force One. “This is now the third day AP reporters have been barred from covering the president – first as a member of the pool, and now from a formal press conference – an incredible disservice to the billions of people who rely on The Associated Press for nonpartisan news,” she said.“It is a plain violation of the First Amendment, and we urge the Trump administration in the strongest terms to stop this practice.
“The Gulf of Mexico has carried that name for more than 400 years. The Associated Press will refer to it by its original name while acknowledging the new name Trump has chosen,” it said at the time.Asked about the matter earlier in the week after the agency was first barred from an Oval Office event, said it was a matter of importance to the administration that outlets used the term Trump had designated.
