US President Donald Trump has urged his supporters to 'liberate' three Democrat-led states, effectively calling for protests against stay-at-home orders aimed at containing the coronavirus.

In a series of tweets, the President urged people in Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia to rise up and "liberate" themselves from restrictions.

However some governors made it clear they are not ready to break out the roadmap, saying they badly need help from Washington to expand testing. Many Americans, especially in rural areas and other parts of the country that have not seen major outbreaks, have urged governors to reopen their economies.Credit:Protesters have taken to the streets in Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia and Michigan, where more than 3000 turned out on Wednesday in what looked like one of the President's rallies, complete with "MAGA" hats and Trump flags.

Public health experts have warned that lifting the restrictions too soon would see the virus return in a second wave. They have repeatedly warned that any easing of stay-at-home measures must be accompanied by wider testing and tracing.
