We’re at risk poisoning our debates with alternative facts. We don’t need to agree, but we do need to disagree better.
The greatest post-modernist philosopher of our time, former US president Donald Trump, has created a warp in our collective perception of reality. His followers inhabit a parallel reality, in which the last US election was stolen. Somewhere along the line, his fiercest critics also got caught up in the distortion field and became equally unmoored.
And then three days out from referendum day, Indigenous senator Pat Dodson declared at the National Press Club: “I don’t believe in the polls.” Desperate to counter conspiracy theories over polling bias, psephologist Kevin Bonham waged a one-man twitter campaign to refute “industrial-scale poll denialism”.
So in the Voice debate, a progressive might have argued that Indigenous Australians needed a voice because they were and are oppressed, while a conservative would have contended that the march of civilisation has benefited everyone, including Indigenous Australians. Sound familiar so far? Meanwhile, a libertarian could have worried that the Voice’s enshrined powers would be used coercively.
