The Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea all rejected the vessel, which was carrying more than 2,200 people including Australians, despite the fact that there were no confirmed cases of coronavirus on board. Holland America said 20 passengers and crew were screened for coronavirus"out of an abundance of caution" but all results came back negative.

The ship has been dubbed the"Wester-damned" by some on social media because of its hitherto uncertain fate. Holland America's chief executive officer Stein Kruse blamed"a terrible and unfortunate misunderstanding" for keeping the ship at sea for so long, and said US officials had worked closely with Cambodian counterparts to secure a resolution.
