President Trump has promised a federal probe into the Jussie Smollett case
President Donald Trump said Thursday that the Justice Department would examine Chicago prosecutors’ decision to drop disorderly conduct charges against actor Jussie Smollett, who was accused of orchestrating a fake, racially motivated attack against himself.
“FBI & DOJ to review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago,” the president wrote on Twitter. “It is an embarrassment to our Nation!” Smollett’s story first emerged in late January, when he said he was attacked in Chicago by two men who poured bleach on him, tied a rope around his neck and yelled homophobic slurs. Smollett also accused the attackers of telling him he was in “MAGA country,” a reference to the president’s “make America great again” slogan.EmailBy signing up you agree to receive email newsletters or alerts from POLITICO. Reports that Smollett had allegedly faked the attack prompted Trump allies and defenders to lash out at the media over its reporting tying the actor’s supposed assailants to the president.
