Trump's refusal came after Elon Musk , chosen by Trump to control government spending, launched a social media campaign on his platform X, criticizing the measure negotiated by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.
This move solidifies Musk's influence as a political force, a power amplified by his wealth and ownership of X, Tesla, and SpaceX. Chris Pack, former communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund, stated, 'There is no doubt he does wield a lot of influence over Republicans right now due to his proximity to Trump.' Unless a deal is passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and the Democratic-majority Senate, the US government will partially shut down on Saturday, disrupting funding for various sectors including air travel and law enforcement in the days leading up to Christmas. Over 2 million federal workers will also be affected, as they will not receive paychecks. However, many government operations, such as Social Security retirement payments, will continue.
