US President Donald Trump's suggestion that Egypt and Jordan take in Palestinians from Gaza has ignited controversy. While he argues it could be a step towards Middle East peace, the proposal has drawn criticism from Hamas and raised concerns about displacement and regional instability.
Displaced Palestinians wait anxiously to be allowed back into their homes in northern Gaza . US President Donald Trump has proposed a controversial plan, urging Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from the war-torn Gaza Strip. He believes this could contribute to peace in the Middle East, stating, 'We should just clear out the whole thing.' During a media briefing following a phone call with Jordan 's King Abdullah, Mr.
Trump suggested that the relocation could be either temporary or permanent, highlighting the dire situation in Gaza. 'It's literally a demolition site right now, almost everything is demolished and people are dying there,' he said. 'So I'd rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change.' Mr. Trump further expressed his hope that Egypt would accept more Gazan residents and indicated that he would be speaking with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday. However, this proposal has sparked immediate concern and backlash. Basem Naim, a spokesperson for Hamas, the Palestinian militant group governing Gaza, condemned the plan, stating that it would fuel long-standing Palestinian fears of being permanently displaced from their homes. He declared, 'We will not accept any offers or solutions, even if (such offers) appear to have good intentions under the guise of reconstruction, as announced in the proposals of US President Trump.' The anxieties surrounding potential displacement stem from the historical trauma of the 'Nakba,' or catastrophe, when 700,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes during the creation of Israel in 1948. Neighboring countries also fear that a mass exodus from Gaza would destabilize the region. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi asserted that the country's stance against any displacement of Palestinians from Gaza remains 'firm and unwavering.' Adding to the complexity, both Hamas and the Israeli military have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement reached last week. The disagreements escalated on Saturday when Israel announced it would restrict Palestinian movement northwards until the release of Arbel Yehud, an Israeli civilian woman being held captive. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office stated that Ms. Yehud's release was a part of the ceasefire agreement, and her continued detention constituted a breach. Hamas countered that blocking returns to the north also violated the truce, insisting they had provided 'all the necessary guarantees' for Yehud's release. Hamas officials stated they informed mediators that Ms. Yehud was alive and would be released on February 1. Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians seeking to return to their homes in northern Gaza are facing roadblocks from Israeli forces
