President Donald Trump’s pick to fill the Justice Department’s No. 3 post, Jessie Liu, abruptly withdrew her name from consideration Thursday after Republican senators raised concerns about liberal positions taken by the women’s legal group she helped lead more than a decade ago.
Liu’s withdrawal also highlights the lack of racial and gender diversity among the Justice Department’s top ranks. As a daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Liu would have brought a dash of diversity to public department events that now routinely feature a stage filled entirely with white men.Sign Up The stumbling block for Liu was her service in 2005 and 2006 as vice president of the National Association of Women Lawyers when she was an assistant U.S. attorney in Washington. During that time, the group opposed President George W. Bush’s nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court and backed abortion rights.
“Unfortunately, a women's lawyers professional organization that Jessie was affiliated with more than a dozen years ago took certain controversial positions at the time, and those positions have now generated opposition to her nomination from the Senate Judiciary Committee,” Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said.
