Peter Navarro, a senior trade adviser to US President Donald Trump, has accused Australia of 'crushing' the American aluminum sector with its imports, claiming that the country is flooding US markets with cheap metal. Navarro's comments come after Trump announced a 25% tariff on steel imports, sparking concern among Australian exporters. Navarro alleges that Australia broke a 'verbal commitment' to limit aluminum exports, a claim disputed by former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he remains hopeful that the local steel and aluminum industry can be spared from the tariff regime and is seeking clarification from the US administration.

Navarro, Trump’s senior adviser on trade and manufacturing, doubled down on that claim in American TV interviews. Also criticising the actions of Mexico, Canada, South Korea and Brazil, Navarro wrote in a Fox News comment piece of his concerns about “widespread tariff circumvention by foreign countries – including many of our putative allies”.
“Our aluminium industry is on its back. It’s at 50% capacity utilisation. In Australia it’s 90%. And we can’t afford not to have strong aluminium and steel industries.” “President Trump gave a very clear signal yesterday when he said that an exemption for Australia is under great consideration. They’re his words, they’re consistent with the discussion that I had with President Trump,” he said. “It was a very warm and constructive discussion.”
