Taking to social media, President Trump said strikes would continue before claiming US forces would move to take control of Iran's oil industry.
"The United States will be hitting Iran , VERY HARD TONIGHT," he wrote.
"At some point in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela, which is working out brilliantly for both Venezuela and the United States of America. Up to 90 per cent of Iran's oil products are exported from the island, while it also acts a major storage site. President Trump has previously suggested the US could target the island, even hinting he could move to put boots on the ground in order to seize oil infrastructure.
