Incumbents keep seats in school board races in Alamo Heights, Southwest ISDs
People line up to vote at Brook Hollow Library on Saturday. On the ballot were the city's bond package, two state propositions on property taxes, school board seats and suburban city council elections.Alamo Heights Independent School District voters reelected Brian C. Hamilton, the school board’s vice president, to a second term, and Southwest ISD incumbents also turned back challenges.
Hamilton thanked those who voted for him and said the results showed the community’s endorsement of the district administration and its hard work. Hughes, 74, had said she decided to run after hearing that teachers were undergoing “equity training,” and she opposed the district’s Equity Council, claiming both had ties to critical race theory, and said new programs should be vetted by an academic committee to make sure the district wasn’t furthering political agendas.
Kibler, 46, ran with a desire to attract and retain strong teachers with higher pay. She said she had wanted teacher salaries to jump to $60,000 or more., candidates were asked how they would direct the district to handle transgender students’ use of campus bathrooms and locker rooms, a question that arose after one of the district’s campuses made a temporary change in the way students used the restrooms.
Vasquez and Sudolcan teamed up this year to run as a slate, saying that they wanted to maintain stability on the board.
