Witnesses have given evidence to the Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry about growing up in Cherbourg, a government-run Aboriginal mission that still evokes traumatic memories for many First Nations survivors.

"You would get beatings and floggings, could be a strap, could be a switch — that was a daily routine, some boys copped it more than others," he said. "When you got no love shown to you as a child and you are living in that type of residence, it's any wonder people come out traumatised." "The real history for Queenslanders is about the history of these missions and reserves and people being displaced from their land and culture," he said.
Around 12 months later, her mother was sent away to work as a domestic servant for white farming families in remote areas and had no choice in where she went.
