Visibility across the San Francisco Bay Area dropped to a half-mile or less due to dense fog.

Fog is common in the Bay Area, especially during the summer months in San Francisco and the coastal areas. In summer, the fog is formed by warmer air hovering above the cooler Pacific Ocean and then blows inland, sometimes reaching valleys, often clinging to coastal areas such as San Francisco's Sunset district.

Tule fog is different from the fog the region gets in the summer fog. It's a thick and wet fog that forms in the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento Valley, hugging the ground and usually occurring from late fall through early spring after the first significant rainfall. It forms in the Central Valley when skies are clear and temperatures cool, and occasionally drifts into the Bay Area.

Walbrun said a light off-shore wind is currently blowing the fog through the Delta and into the Bay Area.
