One man shielding his face with a scarf spoke furiously about the lack of help from the Turkish leader, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. "We ask God to accept the dead among the martyrs, to heal the wounded, and to bring out those trapped under the rubble in safety and health."More than 16,000 people have been killed in Syria and Turkey, the latest figures show.The increase has been reported in rebel-held areas, where 1,900 people have died, according to the White Helmets.The death toll in Turkey stands at 3,162.Babies found alone in the city of Kahramanmaras have been flown to Turkey's capital, Ankara.

The heart of this disaster lies at the end of the highway which leads to Kahramanmaras, a bustling city of a million people, perched up in the mountains of central Turkey. Nine residential blocks of up to 11 stories had been ripped from their foundations, their occupants buried in disorderly tombs. The Turkish government says it is doing everything it can and describes the rescue operation as"improving on a daily basis."
