San Diego State quarterback Jalen Mayden loses two fumbles that provided two-touchdown swing; Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty too tough to tackle
San Diego State discovered some offense in Friday night’s Mountain West opener against Boise State.
Jeanty led Boise State with a combined 236 yards rushing and receiving against the Aztecs . He rushed 23 times for 205 yards, averaging 8.9 yards a carry.SDSU quarterback Jalen Mayden completed 12 straight passes before throwing a third-quarter incompletion. He also used his legs for significant yardage, leading the Aztecs with 85 yards rushing on 16 carries. A 10-yard TD run by Mayden completed the scoring with 42 seconds remaining. He limped into the end zone on the run.
The Aztecs had the nation’s 114th ranked scoring offense coming into the game. That, after scoring 13 points against UCLA and 9 points at Oregon State in their previous two games. It was part of a back-and-forth first half that began with a strong start by SDSU’s defense, which forced Boise State to punt away its first three possessions.Boise State’s first touchdown came when Green lofted a 25-yard pass over the head of SDSU’s Davaughn Celestine into the waiting arms of Broncos wide receiver Eric McAlister.
Mayden threaded the needle with his throw past Boise State safety Rodney Robinson, who swiped at the ball but missed.SDSU’s Kenan Christon sparked the Aztecs on the opening kickoff when he received the ball a yard deep in the end zone and returned it 71 yards to the Boise State 30-yard line.
