This eight-part series is a black comedy, a thriller and a poignant meditation on ageing, grief and the passing of time.

writer/director Sam Esmail, is a difficult one to explain, as it traverses several genres.

In the first couple of episodes, in which we’re introduced to married couple Emma and Noah , it’d be easy to think the storyline is on a similar trajectory to, which focused on the lives and often dark secrets of the guests and the staff of a luxury resort. Stick with it, though, andsoon becomes something else. Before then, without revealing too much, it’s at once a comedy, a thriller and a poignant meditation on ageing, grief and the passing of time.

Sam , who was on holiday with his family, seemingly disappeared in a freak hurricane that destroyed the Oceana Vista, but Emma believes there’s more to it, and cajoles Noah into helping her solve the mystery; they’re both more excited by this than the resort’s day trips to local ruins. It helps that one of the texts on Sam’s phone intriguingly reads “Don’t f--- with the yellow snake, it has four noses”. And so begins the amateur detective element of the story.

Some of the wackier elements at times jar with where this unusual storytelling ends up, but with such a talented cast, it’s forgivable, even if you might still have questions come the final episode.Find out the next TV, streaming series and movies to add to your must-sees.
