As a remastered version of Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense is released, we asked local musicians to name their own favourites. Expect some surprises.
“They hired out the Royal Albert Hall and filled it with smoke. Some of them knew it was their last gig and some of them didn’t and it’s intense and it’s brooding and it’s a perfect example of that band and what they mean to me. I like that drama. I’ve always found them very intelligent, and challenging, lyric and mood wise. I’m still in love with them, and with that look.
“It’s their last gig and James Murphy, the leader of LCD Sound System, spends most of the film trying to negotiate parking for his family. So it’s all the tour punishment, you know? He looks bedraggled, haggling with all the admin, which is just really funny, in a musician, to see. This life/career-defining moment: he’s sold out Madison Square Garden, and he’s fixated on parking. But my God, the concert is unbelievable.
“As someone who has played in bands, it’s all so relatable. I’ve heard people say that it’s incredibly indulgent. We didn’t need eight hours of this. But I just wanted it to go on and on. There were moments where I’d just be overwhelmed with emotion — because they’re not here! Because some f---wit shot [John Lennon] at the age of 40 which is ... it’s just... I can’t watch it without… I’m sorry, I get very teary these days.
