WARNING DISTRESSING CONTENT Rocko died in agony at the hands of Dudley Payne in

As Dudley Payne stood in the witness box at Preston Crown Court, the lies came tumbling from his lips.

He said on February 1, he left for work at 8:30am, and returned home at 8pm, after a short visit to the pub. Rocko had been in his crate all day, with food and water, and hadn't been let out for a toilet break at any time. Remarkably, the puppy hadn't messed in his crate, he said. When Rocko died in his arms, he said he was "heartbroken", and took the puppy to bed with him, cradling him in his arms all night. When the prosecution, Ms Carmen Wilde, showed pictures of blood pooling around Rocko's ruptured eye socket, he claimed he couldn't see it.

Straight away it was clear to Mr Wilson and the vet that all was not well. Rocko had visible injuries to his eye socket and groin - swelling, scratches and cigarette burns.
