Two out-of-state climbers were rescued from the top of Tasmania's Totem Pole after their ropes became tangled in strong winds. The rescue operation was complicated by unfavorable weather conditions, requiring rescuers to hike in from Fortescue Bay and scale the rock formation in challenging conditions.
Two climbers have been rescued from the top of a 60m-high rock formation in Tasmania. The pair became stuck at the top of the Totem Pole at Cape Huoy on the Tasman Peninsula, with police called about 6pm on Wednesday. The climbers — who were from out of state — said their ropes had become tangled in strong winds and they were unable to get to safety, Senior Constable Callum Herbert said.
Rescuers ultimately hat to walk in from nearby Fortescue Bay, reaching the Totem Pole about 11.30pm, he said. “Members from the Climbing Club of Tasmania Vertical Rescue Team conducted a complicated vertical rescue of the two climbers,” Herbert said. “This involved members of the club partially scaling the Totem Pole in wet, dark and windy conditions.” Once rescuers made contact with the climbers, the pair were secured with ropes and moved to other cliffs.
