Pacific Championships: Lindsay Collins revealed he had some strong words with a trainer who told him to get up after getting smashed by Haumole Olakau'atu.

Prior to the 2024 season we identified a potential breakout star from all 17 NRL clubs that was set for a big year.

But the truth of the matter is it took over two years of hard work for the 21-year-old to emerge as an NRL star. And his time did come, playing 16 games in the centres and potentially cementing his spot for years to come after the departure of players like Justin Olam and Reimis Smith in 2024. Henry, meanwhile, carried the ball well but the best part of his game was his defensive resolve, making a mountain of tackles.

It’s clear Henry’s going to be a key member of this middle forward pack at the foot of the mountain for years to come. The Roosters didn’t have many players debut make their NRL debuts in 2024, with Ethan King, Mark Nawaqanitawase and De La Salle Va’a the players outside of Blake Steep. Steep’s third and final showing was a 26-minute stint against the Rabbitohs in Round 27 where the young gun middle forward held his hands up and made 12 tackles and run for 48 metres.

It’s been a long road for Iro, growing up in the Cook Islands before moving to New Zealand, playing one reserve grade for the Warriors in 2019. Following injuries to Zac Laybutt and a late withdrawal from Tom Chester, Purdue made his debut at only 18 against the Roosters in Round 13. The rising star was handed the Cowboys’ Rookie of the Year award this season, and he’s also a smokey to earn a spot in the halves next year.

While the 23-year-old averaged just three runs and 26 metres per game, his link play was vital to Canterbury’s attack and he emerged as a key man in Ciraldo’s rotation. The 19-year-old took only 11 NSW Cup games to earn an NRL debut, being thrown into the fire at fullback against the Storm in Round 12.

Hopoate also enjoyed an impressive try-scoring streak midway through the 2024 season, crossing for eight tries across six successive games. Across 12 games in his debut campaign the Maitland product scored 11 times, broke 66 tackles, while averaging 122 metres per game. Highly-rated coming through the grades, Strange scored a hat-trick for the Blues in their 2023 Under-19s State of Origin victory, and continued his fine form in first grade.

Despite suffering an ACL injury in reserve grade to close out the year, his campaign was special and once he’s fit to return, it remains to be seen if Kristian Woolf believes he’s best placed at fullback over Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, who could shift into the centres. The 23-year-old got a taste of first grade in 2023, playing two games before he became a regular in 2024, featuring 21 times.

Only two players made their NRL debuts for the Dragons this year in Lyhkan King-Togia and Savelio Tamale. He played in the Steelers’ SG Ball side in 2023 before graduating to Jersey Flegg and then NSW Cup, where he was plucked out of this year to make his NRL debut. The 20-year-old came through the ranks at the famed Keebra Park State High, and his status only rose after being named in Queensland’s Under 19’s side in 2023.

Mozer, after breaking into the side this year, will be desperate to push on and become the club’s first string hooker with a big pre-season and a clean slate. The Samoan-born, 20-year-old is contracted to New Zealand until the end of 2026, hoping to play more minutes as his NRL career progresses. The Titans where dealt a heavy blow when captain and enforcer Tino Fa’asuamaleaui succumbed to an ACL injury against the Bulldogs in Round 3, rubbing him out for the remainder of the season. In stepped 20-year-old prop Josiah Pahulu, who burst onto the scene in Round 5 against the Cowboys.

From the sacking of Brad Arthur to telling captain Gutherson he is free to negotiate with rival clubs come November 1, controversy continued to swirl at the Eels. While Parramatta have recruited Isaiah Iongi, who is highly rated, Talagi is one of rugby league’s most promising stars and is on track to become an elite player.

After a long apprenticeship in reserve grade, Gagai finally made his long awaited NRL debut in Las Vegas, at the ripe old age of 28.“I knew I had the ability to perform at this level and there were obviously times I thought of throwing it away,” he said to AAP. His age had a lot of pundits concerned, but Benji stuck to his guns and threw the teenager into first grade, backing him to get the job done.
