The opening game of the season is when fans carry unrealistic hopes based on unfounded optimism in their hearts.

When the inevitable Fulham goal arrived, the game was over. There was no way Everton would score two goals, and everybody in the stadium knew it. Was there any evidence of real progress or change on Saturday? Not really. Is there any evidence that last season’s second-lowest scorers in the Premier League have addressed that problem? I don’t think so. Another defeat and failure to score will make Everton’s next game against Wolverhampton Wanderers already look like a six-pointer. Clearly, you don’t want to read too much into one game. Everton lost their first two matches in 1984/85 but still romped away with the title.

Of course, the elephant in the room was the wasteful finishing on show, particularly from Neal Maupay, who is clearly devoid of confidence, and I don’t know if it’s in part to do with the abhorrent personal abuse he’s suffered since then, but I actually feel quite sorry for the Frenchman.
