Two 27-year-old men have been charged with criminal damage in circumstances of racial aggravation following a series of antisemitic graffiti incidents in Perth over the weekend. The charges come after a swastika and hateful messages were spray-painted on walls and signs in several locations, prompting condemnation from state officials and a renewed focus on combating antisemitism.
Two men have been charged in connection with a series of antisemitic graffiti incidents that took place in Perth over the weekend. A wall outside a home on Viking Road in Dalkeith was vandalized with a Nazi swastika and the words 'f… Jews' spray-painted on Sunday. On the same street, a for sale sign and a give way sign were also targeted with antisemitic graffiti.
Similar messages were discovered painted on a bus stop in Dianella, covering an election campaign advertisement for Labor's Mt Lawley candidate Frank Paolin.Police Commissioner Col Blanch stated that two men, both 27 years old, have been charged with criminal damage in circumstances of racial aggravation. These charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 14 years imprisonment. One man faces charges related to the graffiti in Dalkeith, while the second man has been charged in connection with incidents in Dalkeith, Nedlands, and Dianella. Commissioner Blanch explained that the graffiti in Langford is part of the same investigation, but officers haven't yet gathered sufficient evidence to proceed with charges. 'What we did over the next two and a half days was firm up the evidence against them,' he said. WA Premier Roger Cook condemned these 'evil and corrosive' acts, asserting that such 'vile and cowardly' attacks would not be tolerated in the community. 'We will not stand by and allow this corrosive behaviour to undermine people's sense of peace and security in Western Australia,' he stated. From next month, WA police will gain additional powers to combat antisemitic activities when legislation banning the display of the swastika and performing the Nazi salute comes into effect. This new law will impose a maximum penalty of up to five years in jail for anyone who draws a Nazi symbol on public property or on someone else's private property without their consent. Meanwhile, WA Education Minister Tony Buti announced that public school teachers will receive a message today regarding their role in addressing antisemitism. 'I directed the Director General of Education today to write to all teachers in regards to ensuring that personal political views aren't brought into the classroom and particularly mentioned antisemitism,” he told a media conference. When asked if a specific incident prompted the letter, Dr Buti said there 'was an incident last year at one school'. 'But we just wanted to make sure that as we have a rise in antisemitism, we do everything we can to stamp it out,” he added. 'In the end it's only education that's going to stamp this out, so that's why the education system is incredibly important, just not the education system but educating the general public.
