A microlight crashed into the sea off the coast, killing the pilot and passenger. A recovery operation is underway, but the tide is making it difficult.
A recovery operation restarted this morning after the microlight crashed in the sea off the coast. The pilot and passenger, aged 67 and 69, died in the crash, NSW chief inspector Stuart Campbell told media. A recovery mission for the plane wreckage is underway after two men in their 60s were killed. Emergency services including water police, the Westpac Rescue helicopter and other marine-based crews responded after witnesses spotted the light plane crashing into the ocean.
Campbell said the men have been identified however could not give more details. Some parts of the aircraft have washed up at the beach. Police Inspector Stuart Campbell said the recovery of the wreckage is being made difficult by the tide. 'We're struggling with the tides and movement of the debris,' Campbell said of the recovery mission. Witnesses said the plane crashed into the water around 4pm. Police said an inquiry is now under way into the cause of the crash. Officers from Mid North Coast Police District and Marine Area Command, along with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), are assisting in the investigation
