The critically endangered Mount Cole grevillea has re-emerged after recent Victorian bushfires, however conservationists are worried it won't survive the wait for three promised national parks to materialise.
A critically endangered grevillea has re-emerged after Victorian bushfires. Conservationists say its habitat must be given national park status. In 2021, the Andrews Labor government announced it would create three new national parks in Victoria's west.
When fires swept through the state forest west of Ballarat in February, all known populations of the critically endangered Mount Cole grevillea were wiped out, according to Ben Gill from the Victorian National Parks Association . A spokesperson for DEECA stated they were delighted that there had been "significant regeneration of the species".
"It's really about time that the government met their promise and properly instigated these protections."In 2021, then environment minister Lily D'Ambrosio announced the creation of three new national parks in Victoria's west. "Legislation to create the first two national parks, Wombat-Lerderderg National Park and Mount Buangor National Park, will be introduced to parliament in November," the spokesperson said.
