Two participants in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race on separate vessels have died from being hit by a sail boom. At 11.50pm on Thursday, officers were notified that a crew member on board on of the yachts had been struck by the boom. Fellow crew members performed CPR, but they could not be revived. Then, at 2.15am on Friday police were told a second person on another yacht had been hit by a sail boom and CPR was unsuccessful.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, which administers the yacht race, said that the sailors who died were entrants on Flying Fish Arctos and Bowline. “Our thoughts are with the crews, family and friends of the deceased,” the CYCA said in a statement.“Further information will be provided as it becomes available.” The race will continue as the fleet continues its passage to Constitution Dock, with the first boats expected to arrive later on Friday or early Saturday morning.
