Government accounts published two years late hinder probes into ‘how it manages taxpayers’ money’, MPs warn
The 2019-20 Whole of Government Accounts were published 26 months after the statutory five-month deadline. criticised the Treasury for releasing them so late. It warned that the accounts are “increasingly unreliable and incomplete” because of local failures of audit – also hit by Covid-19. “Now we see the same picture emerging in the cross-government national accounts. We still desperately need to see the big picture as the Government balances one massive intervention after another – from the pandemic response to the interrelated energy, climate and cost-of-living crises.
