Women fleeing abusive relationships are getting caught up in protracted and costly legal disputes because there still isn't a way for the tax office to easily share superannuation information with courts, nearly two years after it was promised.
"Women without access to the information and also without access to free legal assistance such as ours are forced to walk away from accessing their entitlement to superannuation after relationship breakdown, mainly due to family violence or economic abuse because, simply, it's too hard and costly to get access to that information."
"I had the opportunity to get back into the house while he was at work and I literally had to go and rifle quickly through our filing cabinet just to write down anything I could, any kind of numbers I could see. Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said in a question on notice this week the co-design process had started between the ATO, Family Court and the Attorney-General's Department and draft legislation to underpin it would be released "as soon as practicable".
