Inquest begins into death of Pippa White, with deputy state coroner examining whether she received appropriate care

has told a coronial inquest into her death he thought she “might” have had sepsis but she didn’t meet the criteria for blood testing.

The NSW deputy state coroner Joan Baptie is examining whether Pippa’s death was preventable and whether she received appropriate care at the hospitals in Cowra and Orange and from the Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service team.Pippa Mae White presented to Cowra hospital in 2022 with her mother and died from sepsis at Orange hospital the next day, just shy of her 3rd birthday.

She was administered antibiotics and given an urgent chest X-ray, which showed she had pneumonia that had caused a “complete whiteout” of her left lung. The inquest heard Pippa first presented to Cowra hospital before 2pm on 12 June. She was triaged by a nurse who recorded her heart rate at a high 171 beats a minute, which is considered a “red zone” observation for sepsis.

Parts of Mir’s evidence were at odds with that of Pippa’s parents’, the court heard. The doctor disputed their claims that he did not examine Pippa with a stethoscope and that he told waiting patients to go home if they weren’t in a serious condition due to long wait times.Pippa had five siblings. Her parents, extended family and friends sat in the coroner’s court in Lidcombe. They wore yellow – her favourite colour.

The inquest heard Mir called consultant paediatrician Prof Adam Buckmaster in Orange for advice. Buckmaster also believed Pippa had a viral illness and dehydration and arranged for her to be transported to the larger hospital.
