Packing winds of around 125mph, the super typhoon could make landfall late on Friday or early on Saturday in Guangdong
In Guangdong, trains have been suspended until 6pm on Saturday and nearly 85,000 fishing boats operating off the coast have returned to port.
In the gambling hub of Macau, all casinos will temporarily close from 11pm local time on Friday until further notice, the government said. The casinos had just begun recovering after three years of Covid-induced lockdowns and travel disruptions. The Hong Kong Observatory warned of serious flooding in coastal areas and said the maximum water level might be similar to when Mangkhut felled trees and tore scaffolding off buildings in the city.
As Hong Kong braced Friday for heavy rains and strong winds, about 330 people sought refuge at temporary shelters and ferry and bus services were halted.
