Former NSW Police detective Gary Jubelin has been fined $10,000 and convicted for making illegal recordings during the William Tyrrell investigation.Jubelin was fined $2,500 for each of his four counts of recording a person without permissionJubelin maintained his actions were backed by a lawful right and operational need
Jubelin, 57, was on Monday found guilty by a magistrate of breaching the Surveillance Devices Act by recording four conversations with person of interest Paul Savage on a mobile phone. The former detective's career spanned more than three decades until he resigned last year after being accused of wrongdoing.
In sentencing, Magistrate Ross Hudson today said the illegal recording of conversations could cause future court proceedings to be thrown out and the"tentacles" of such conduct should be noted. "It strikes across the heart, extent, nature and purpose of the Surveillance Devices Act," he told Downing Centre Local Court.Outside court, Jubelin said he was disappointed and had lodged an immediate appeal."I've put people before the courts. The system mightn't be perfect but it's the best system we've got.
