Oleksandr Usyk has scored a razor-thin split decision over Tyson Fury to become undisputed heavyweight boxing world champion in a thrilling contest at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh. The 37-year-old Ukrainian is the first boxer to hold all four major heavyweight belts at the same time and the first undisputed champion since the end of Lennox Lewis’ reign in April 2000. But Fury was fuming after the fight, believing he had won. “I believe I won that fight,” he said.

Fury managed to hang on until the bell but he struggled through the final three rounds of the fight as Usyk chased him down to edge him out on the judges’ scorecards. Fury’s promoter Frank Warren was quick to confirm after the fight that an immediate rematch is possible through an existing contract clause. “I am ready for rematch,” Usyk responded. Fury looked almost buried at the end of the ninth round when he collapsed onto the ropes, a sight that experts had “never seen” in him before.
