United Auto Workers members at Mack Trucks are poised to walk off the job Monday after overwhelmingly voting down a proposed five-year contract.late Sunday. The union said any member who’s at work as of 7 a.m. Monday would exit their facilities.“The members have spoken, and as the highest authority in our union, they have the final word,” UAW president Shawn Fain said in the strike notice.
Fain said the union remains committed to reaching an agreement but added “clearly we are not there yet.” He said there are still a number of topics at issue, spelling out a long list of provisions related to pay, work schedules, benefits, and health and safety. In a Sunday bargaining update, Mack said it is “surprised and disappointed” that union members rejected the tentative deal reached Oct. 2.“The company clearly demonstrated its commitment to good faith bargaining by arriving at a tentative agreement that was endorsed by both the International UAW and the UAW Mack Truck Council,” the company said in an unsigned statement. It also seemed to push back on comparisons to other automakers.
