Uber is set to pay $271.8 million to Australian taxi drivers who have suffered financially since the ride share giant’s entry into the market.
Uber has agreed to pay $271.8 million to Australian taxi and hire car drivers for loss of income and licence values in a first-of-its-kind legal settlement.
Maurice Blackburn Lawyer Michael Donelly said the result held Uber to account after the company fought “at every turn to deny our group members any form of remedy”.“This will be the fifth highest class action settlement in Australian legal history. The case had been filed back in 2019 in the Victorian Supreme Court, with Melbourne taxi-driver Nick Andrianakis chosen as the lead plaintiff.
“It was a win for taxi drivers and hire car operators. The result today, I’m very pleased with as it hasn’t been done before,” he said. “It’s devastated families, thousands of families, including my own,” he said.
