A report into the treatment of fans at the 2022 Champions League Final has found a failure to create effective plans and heed warnings about supporters which 'almost lead to a disaster'.
The UEFA-commissioned review into the treatment of Liverpool fans outside Paris’ Stade de France found there were failures that “almost led to a disaster”.

Picture: Matthias Hangst/Getty ImagesIt included a “disproportionately large number of Liverpool supporters” who were directed to arrive via the “Stade de France: Saint-Denis’ Station” compared to previous major events at the stadium, the document read.
The use of tear gas and pepper spray in a confined space on the concourse also contributed to the chaos, as well as a lack of contingency plans relating to turnstile access and what to do when situations took a wrong turn. They were found to have ignored “good information and intelligence” from several sources that indicated there had been “no significant issues of football-related violence involving supporters of either finalist club in recent years”.
“Unfortunately, the enthusiasm around the game rapidly turned into a real ‘near miss’ which was harmful to a significant number of fans from both clubs,” he wrote. The report finished with 21 recommendations which will ensure"everything possible is done" to avoid a similar “near miss” occurs in the future.
